I know that there was a case in Scotland recently where prisoners were compensated for having to slop out (go to toilet in pots when locked up) in their cells. Just wondering what the situation is now? It still happens in Ireland - I had to do this when I was in prison recently - and there was no compensation over here. It is amazing that people still have to do this these days.

Believe me prison is a punishment.
heatheruk - You're talking about Cat D prisons - the least secure of all. Most places aren't like that - you definitely don't have a key to your cell.
Surely you still have the right to be treated well even in prison - all I'm looking for is a proper toilet. Try sleeping or eating with your stuff in a pot beside you - not pleasant.
reggie - glad you're not running the system.

I feel that prisoners have to easy a time in prison nowadays. Yes it true that they were paid compo they took their case to the European Human rights court and won. A bad day for society. All prisoners should spend at least 20 hours a day locked up in their cells with no TV, Radio, Books, Magazines, etc. So that they can think on ways to pay back society for their crimes and also it would cost us the tax payer less

Slopping out is gradually being phases out, not because of prisoners rights, but mainly because the screws don't like unlocking cell doors at night to let us out for a crap! It was like that in the Scrubs.

I know someone who works in the local prison, and the prisoners live a life of luxury.
They have a gym/games room and even a key to their own cell so they can lock themselves in their cell (and get up to god knows what). Doesn't sound much like punishment to me!

I think that most of the prisons in England now have `proper` toilets, certainly the new ones do.

slopping out was ended in the nineties in the UK Strangeways etc had a lot to do with it. personally I hate people that think that human rights are actually human privilages. Prisoners, as all others in our society, deserve to be treated with dignity and ought to be afforded the same basic rights as everyone else

People go to prison for a reason - punishment. Life should be made as diifficult as possible, as a deterent to re-offending. Seeing as a lot of criminals now get a better life in prison, whats the motivation to turn back to the straight and narrow?
