Good one. Bassists are usually the forgotten, reserved ones althought they are just as indespensible to a band as any other performer.
Personally have to go with skill, John Paul Jones - Led Zeppelin listen to Rock&Roll alone fingers had to be bleeding.
Also John Entwistle of The Who & Giddy Lee from Rush Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers has to get honorable mention for being such an artistic performer and breakin the norm of the bassist being the quiet one and farthest from "front-man" status.

for me, its a toss up between Paul Simonon from The Clash or Mike Dirnt from Green Day.
Paul Simonon came into The Clash knowing absolutely nothing about playing any instrument and then soon to become one of the greatest punk bass players is amazing. Plus hes pretty fine looking.
Mike Dirnt on the other hand is a sweet as bass player, especially in songs like Longview, the bass line in that song is awesome and really skilled. With Green Day they're the biggest punk band around now.
