I'm German by upbringing and very strict about it.
The christmas tree goes up on Christmas eve, and is taken down on Epiphany (6th Jan). For the time before Christmas we have an advent wreath with 4 candles, which are lit one after the other on the 4 Sundays preceding Christmas, until 4 candles are burning.
(Our candles are real wax candles, so having the tree for longer would be a real fire hazard.)

Put up a real tree a couple of weeks before Christmas. Be sure to water it often and put aspirin and sugar in the water. Also be sure to keep it covered if you have pets as they can get very sick from the stuff that leeches into the water from the tree. You can take it down any time after Jan. 1. If you have a fake tree put it up when you want and take it down when you want.

There is no right or wrong in when to put up and take down the tree. We typically tend to go get a real tree after Thanksgiving weekend and then take it down end of December.
I know a few friends keep theirs up until February. Just make sure you keep the tree watered.

I usually try to wait til mid Dec., unless the Christmas spirit hits me sooner, like now! Then I take it down on New Year's day. Merry Christmas!

If you leave it up more that 4 weeks you will be able to shake all the needles of and not take it down. Use it for a clothes hanger.

Matter of personal preference. Set it up and take it down whenever you want to.
