It generally gives you the option as soon as you install your new browser. In firefox its Tools/options/general and then click the option for making it your default browser.

Go to Add/Remove Programs. On the left side you will find Set Program Access and Defaults. Click it.
Then click Custom.
Select the default web browser.

Depends on the browser you will use, a popup window will appear asking if you want to set that browser to be your new default browser.
