I have a 2001 VW GOLF with 107,000 Miles on it, I have had it for about a year now, with no issues. But today I was trying to merge onto the freeway, the VW is a Automatic by the way, and when I went to lay into it, it reved up to about 4,000 rpm's and wouldn't go any faster it was like the rev limiter kicked in or something, then when I try going up hills now it won't downshift and when it does it does the same thing, so basically everytime I try to move a little bit faster then " slow as hell " it wont do it, I have to let up on the gas wait for it to shift into a higher gear and just wait for the car to get up to speed. Any suggestion's I am at a loss for words as to what could be the problem. PLEASE HELP!!!

I have a 1998 Golf with similar mileage. Mine has not done that but mine has become a bit low on transmission fluid. I know this because when i first start it, if I put in straight into D, it takes a few seconds to build pressure before it will move forward. Your vehicle may be even lower causing it to have delayed shifts.

It's a muther of a job to check. You have to make sure the car is warmed up, then rwmove a plug on the transmission, if no oil comes out, add unitl it does using a squirt bottle. Other trouble is it is a VW only oil which is $35 a quart from the dealer, no one else has it.

Good luck.

this would be what i look at on this issue.checkout your carb to see if all your connections are all secured. like your passing gear mechazime it might need to be adjusted some, check for any hoses that may have come off the carb or even your transmission or you might just have a bad oil pumpit my not be pumping enough oil to get the compression you need to get up to 4000 rpm or it could even be your timimig chain or belt as well

Automatics have a thing called a slush box. Pray that yours has gone bad because if it is not the slush box it's your transmission and those are spendy. I hope you still have a warranty on your GOLF.

Replace the fuel filter if you haven't already tried that. There are a few different things it could be but start there first.

Does it do it in park too? It might be the fuel filter or air filter. Is it a diesel?
