i have two kids the 1st labour was 3 hours long and the 2nd was just under an hour long, as i heard that the labour can half for each baby so is this true and will it be shorter this time, or should i opt for a home birth as time will be short and dont want to end up having baby in the car on way to hospital. anyone with experience of this i would like info to set my mind at ease.

Best to be on the safe side. Sometimes thirds can surprise by being less straightforward than seconds, but your first labour was *very* short for a first time mum, and quite frankly I'm surprised you got to hospital the second time!

Things to consider are: How close do you live to the hospital? Who's taking you there? If you live very close and can have someone on standby to ensure you will there swiftly, that's a lot different for waiting half an hour for the person even driving you to get to your home! If you could go in at first twinge, it could be OK. If not, then there is a chance you could end up having the baby on the way or having an unplanned home birth (what midwives call a BBA, or born before arrival of the dr or midwife).

Homebirth could set your mind at rest - and of course if by some peverse quirk of fate things take longer this time, you can always change your mind and go into hospital, with the midwife on hand to help you make that decision.

What's the homebirth provision like where you live? Have you spoken to your midwife about this? Would your GP like to be involved? Find out what your options are - some areas are unfortunately so short staffed they say they cannot guarentee a home birth.

Once you've fully explored the options, you can properly weigh up the pros and cons. Good luck!

My 1st was 5hrs, 2nd 3hrs and 3rd 1hr, all in hospital. I was also worried. The advice given to me was to go to hospital as soon as I noticed anything happening like a 'show' or any tightenings I could feel. Also speak to your midwife about getting a kit together at home if needs be so you won't have to run around getting towels, sheets and scissors when your in the middle of delivering. I was lucky on my 3rd as my waters broke an hour before contractions started, baby was born an hour later (the midwife broke them with the other pregnancies) Good luck, hope you make it to hospital.

ive got three children and my first labour was 10 hours, my second was 6 hours and my third was 6 hours too. i was told too that my third labour would b quicker, if ur last labour was just an hour long i would probably ask about having a home birth because u never no how long it might take good luck i hope it all goes well x

even if your labour can be shorter for your third baby, i would still suggest going to a hospital to give birth. it would be okay to give birth at home if you are very very very sure that everything will be okay and normal. however, giving birth in a hospital has advantages such as:
being more aseptic (bacteria free. as hospitals and the utensils used are really disinfected and cleaned).
hospitals have the right personnel (doctors and nurses) who can act in an instant if something goes wrong.
and just in case your baby comes out and the APGAR score is not too good, the hospital will have ready equipment that can save your baby's life.

goodluck

*APGAR scoring is done every few minutes to asses the health of your baby. a=appearance, p=pulse rate, g=grimace/reaction of the baby, a=activity/movement of the baby, r=respiratory rate

these has a corresponding numeral depending on what your baby would do/appear to be like. anyway, if the number is too low, they might have to give him oxygen right away to help him. it doesn't mean that he is sick or will be on oxygen for a while. he might have swallowed too much fluid while still inside your body thus needing the extra help to start his life...

wishing you the best!

I'm so jealous lol!! My fist labor was 18.5 hours long...my second was 16 hours..and I'm now on my third! They have opted to give me a c-section this time around due to having complications last time & I'm actually happy to be having a c-section..I say it's got to be better then 18 hours of excruciating pain and then hemmoraging and etc. I say do what ever is best for you. If you prefer to deliver safely in a hospital ask your doctor if she can induce you 2 weeks before your due date ...due to the fact of your "QUICK" deliveries!! This will insure that you are actually already at the hospital once they induce you and you start labor..so if the baby does come flying out of you..the docs right there to catch him/her lol! GOOD LUCK & CONGRATS

i had very fast labours on my first two kids and on my third i was 20 minutes. just about got to hospital, tho i would have been better off staying home and just getting on with it. when it comes time for this baby to come ring an ambulance instead of making ur own way to hospital, this avoids baby arriving in the car on a public road lol and the ambulance crew will be able to help you deliver baby at home if he/she feels the need to make a swift arrival. also the person who takes the call will be able to give your partner instructions in case they have to help as midwife. dont panic, you know yourself its probably gonna be quick so just look forward to your baby arriving. good luck xx

It just goes to show everyone is different, because I was told that when you have a third its like having a first. Or!! it could be totally different and you may go for hours.
So just do what you would have done before you started to worry.
Every birth is different you can not judge by the one previous, or by what others say. Just relax and go with the flow and enjoy your pregnancy without worrying about what might be.
Good luck, Sheila.

I've experienced this...very scary...#3 came 1 hour after my water broke...had the baby standing up in the bathroom (I at least made it to the hospital after driving there at 100mph)

I scheduled an induction for #4 to avoid this...you should consider the same...labor with him still went fast too--I think he slid right out with the water when they broke it...lol!

Congrats & be careful!!
