Everytime you go to the mall and enter a competition for that sparkling new car you are providing a customer record so the marketeers can ring your contact details for various surveys and products. Everytime you hand over your credit card to purchase something a customer record file is generated matching your credit card number to that product. The credit card companies on-sell that information to manufacturers and retailers.
