Because there have never been any recorded instances where a duck has scored runs whilst batting in a first class match. Hence this lack of skill with the bat on the part of the failed batsman is comparable to that of the fair duck.

In cricket, a duck denotes a batsman getting out for a score of zero and usually used in the saying "Out for a duck". Originally called a "duck's egg" because of the "0" shape in the scorebook. A batsman who is out for a duck twice in the same match is said to have got a pair (short for 'pair of spectacles,' shaped like two zeros).

It is referred to as a duck because it was originally referred to as a "ducks egg" becuase of the similarity in shape of a 0 and a duck egg. There are many types of duck cricket:
Duck: 0 runs-unlimited balls
Golden Duck: Out first ball
Diamond Duck: Out without facing a ball

Duck Out:
a batsman's score of nought (zero), as in "he was out for a duck" or "she hasn't got off her duck yet". Originally called a "duck's egg" because of the "0" shape in the scorebook.
