it should look like a little tab coming out of the brake pad, so if you brake pad is getting low, the tab will rub against the rotor causing a screeching sound so you know to get your brake pads replaced

what year, make, model, engine is it. can tell you more that way. other than that is it a tab of metal that is bent out that attaches to the side of the inside front pad that makes a horrible screaching sound for a warning when the pad gets to the point of needing replaced or looked at. don't let it go check them and save yourself alot of money in repairs. that is what it is there and designed for

on older cars at least it's just a metal shim that will scrape the rotor when the pad wears enough for it to touch, making it vibrate and squeal while driving to let you know it's time.
