I can't figure out why all of my other settings remain the way that I set them. But my anti-virus will not stay "on". My firewall and automatic updates are fine - on and working, but what's up with the anti virus? Any ideas?

Try un-installing the Anti Virus software. And then reinstall the Anti Virus software. Give this a try it should work.

It sounds like the computer has a virus. I've seen this behavior many times at work: the virus turns off the anti-virus software. I would suggest downloading and running McAfee's Stinger:

Good luck!

Probably you have disabled the antivirus. Check it first and scan again. Scan with anti spyware. If you do not have it, install an anti spyware and scan the PC. I can give a few links that offer free spyware removers...! . Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html If antivirus and spyware remover software does not work, you can try to restore the computer to an older working configuration. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html

Some viruses, and other malwares will disable your computers anti-virus apps to prevent detection.

Try these free online scans and see what comes up:

1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender

2. Scan for trojans and remove (free online scan) with Ewido

I had it once with a Trojan virus infection my pc. You need to scan your pc at start up to find and destroy it. Or use Trend Micro's on line virus scan, excellent scanner in situations like this.

If running a full AV scan does not resolve this, you may want to completely disconnect your PC from any network of any kind and re-install the AV from fresh. Then reconnect and update.
