There are lots of Internet Connection speeds and technologies available. But only a few are used physically. A simple Dial-up Modem has a maximum speed of 56kbps (Kilo Bits Per Second). This is the speed that is allocated by the Modem Vendor and not the ISP. So, even if the ISP offers you 100kbps, you will still get 56kbps from your Modem.

As your speed is 12.4 kbps, you are probably having a Dial-Up Connection where you have to dial to the ISP, before getting connected to the Internet.

On the other side, you have BRoadband Connections such as DSL, ADSL, SDSL,etc but only ADSL is used today. ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line) is a high speed connection, where you are always connected to the Internet and you have to pay a fixed amount monthly. The speed of ADSL varies from 100 kbps to 2 mbps.

The final is the Leased Line where a separate network is drawn from your place to the ISP and Leased Line connections are the fastest. Here, the minimum speed would be 100 mbps and ranges upto 10 gbps or more. Leased Lines are normally used by banks for the ATM Backbones.

In the US, the max connect rate for a 56k modem is 53.6 due to FCC limitations on the POTS network.

kBps is kiloBytes per second. kbps is kiloBits per second. Although there are 8 bits per byte, your modem adds up to 3 bits per byte for timing and control purposes so one byte on a modem is actually up to 11 bits. So in the US the max throughput you'll ever see on a 56k modem is around 4.8 kBps.

A download speed of 12.4 kBps translates to a connection of at least 128 kbps and would not be achievable on a dial-up connection unless you were using a bonded connection on 2 phone lines. Your actual connection speed could be much higher than that. Download speeds are limited not only by your connection speed but by the sending server's available upload bandwidth and the available bandwidth across the internet between your machine and the server.

There are several different types of connectoins

The lowest being 23kbs dial up(Not used much anymore).
The next being 56Kpbs dial up(extremly slow for todays fast paced internet).
After that falls DSL internet it connects at about 756kbs but varies
Next would be Cable which can be anywhere from 756- 6000kbps

For your first question then, 56kbps modems will be limited in their connectability which usualy varies between 3 and 15 kbs download speed.

I would say your connection speed is a fast dial up service (56k) perhaps AOL.

Normally it depend on the line. In Singapore, a 56kbps normally get 42kbps or 33.6kbps.

kBps mean Kilo Bytes per second. kbps mean Kilo bits per second.

1 bytes is equal to 8 bits.

If you have a download speed on 12.4kBps mean nothing. Even you are using a super fast boardband service, you might always exprience this speed if the server is slow.

Yes a five year old modem can slow you down. I upgraded my modem after having mine about i dont remeber but probably like 8 or five years old. And it made such a diference. Packets is just a way to talk about information exchange i believe Ya just get a new modem. And if that does not make a difference which i would be surprised if i didnt then talk to your internet provider.
