A switch is smarter than a hub in that it maintains a mini routing table so it knows which port a particular pc is attached to and sends data packets intended for that pc only thru the port the pc is attached to. A hub when it receives a packet it broadcasts that packet to all ports generating a lot more traffic than a switch and causing a lot more "collisions". Also a hub can only operate at half duplex whereas a switch can operate at full duplex. For more detailed info refer to:

SWITCH is a device which is appropriate to connect to larger networks while a HUB is a device that can be used to connect smaller networks.

Basically, a Switch is more intelligent than Hub because, once computers are connected to the Switch, it stores the IP Address, MAC Address, Computer Name etc of the connected computer and when someone sends or requests data to the specified computer, the switch transfers the data directly to that Computer by looking at the Routing Table it has already stored.

A Hub on the other side does not have a Routing Table. When a request is received, it simply transfers the data to all the computers available and its the computers that transfer the data to the original computer through the Hub.

So, simply saying a Hub is an outdated, slow technology compared to a Switch

A hub is older technology, it is a connection point for Nods or a few PC's. Lets say you request information from an external source such as a wep pages, the request go to the hub and then the request or data is send to all other computers looking for the default gateway that connects to the Internet, so it takes a longer time, data gets scattered all over the network. A switch is newer technology. 2 kinds. One that acts like an intelligent hub and one that can be administered using admin software. A switch saves the information on a network, information like the MAC addresses. So if you request a web page, it takes the shortest possible route to the gateway. Admin switches have the ability to be administered for more complex-ed data instructions, and that comes to be a router. Hope this is helpful.

Both are devices for connecting networks i.e.you use them to connect computers together to form a network. They look like a VCR with many ports to plug computers in and fewer ports to connect to other hubs or switches. A network may contain both hubs and switches. A switch is more expensive that a hub usually because switches reduce the data collision which results into data corruption. Hubs do not do that.. Think of it this way. A hub is like a wide road, many cars may be able to go through it but cars may still collide....with a switch it is like every car has it is own road so there is no way they can collide. Obviously, cars resemble data. For more info go to

Switch and HUB both are Network Connectors. The difference between Switch & HUB, Switch will share the data transffer between all the computers equally where as Hub will flectuvate depends up on the users.

A switch is effectively a higher-performance alternative to a hub.
