One way the reaction can go is the fermentation of glucose:

C6H12O6 +2Pi + 2ADP ----> 2CH3CH2OH + 2CO2 + 2ATP +2H2O

where Pi is inorganic phosphate (HPO4-, and ATP is adenosine triphosphate, ADP is adenosine diphosphate).

This is a biochemical reaction and is characteristic of many yeasts. Alcoholic fermentation occurs by the same enzymatic pathway as glycolysis but requires two different enzymatic steps at the end.
