Do lamp posts get switched on via sensors that react to light denisity, or does someone physically flip a switch to switch them on?

The lamp elves do it. Sometimes they miss some though.

the lamp posts have light sensors ontop of the light casing - they look like little pyramids. once the natural light goes below a certain level, an internal switch is triggered, and the light switches on. i think the network of lamposts are monitored on a computer system to tell whether or not there are any lightbulbs that are broken, and i'm sure they can switch them on or off using the computer too.

At least where I live, the street lamps are equipped with sensors that will switch them on. During thunderstorms bright lightning will turn off every street lamp in town temporarily (And for all the smart asses it's not a power outtage, because all of the houses and businesses still have power)

It uses a sensor called a light sensetive resistor.
This means that when there is sufficient light (set at the correct amount) the current is resisted, and therefore the light remains off.

Measurements have been taken to ensure that the right amount of light (or lack thereof) causes the light to illuminate at the right time. because, english winters can pop up some very miserable days. its about UV detection and when that has disappeared enough... VOILA! street lamp goes on.

If every lamp had to be switched on manually, then it would cost a lot of the tax payers money!

Hope that clears things up!

The lamps are operated by light sensors.

Look on thetop of some lamp posts, you will see a clear plastic cylinder shape with a pointy top...that is the sensor.

In the larger centers it would be light sensors and/or timers. The smaller towns and villages would most likely be timer. I doubt that there is a switch flipper.
