Hacking is a term given to someone who programs or manipulates a program to improve it.
The term that most people above describe is called CRACKING.
I will assume your second question is how do you know if someone has cracked into your computer. If the person doing the cracking is good then you won't know. To find out if an average cracker has gotten into your machine then you need to keep an eye on the system logs, use a packet sniffer to watch traffic on your network. There are others but since whole books have been written about the topic I don't think there is enough room here...

Hacking is the gaining access to a system. There is a separate course which teaches u how to hack n the course is named as Legal And Ethical Hacking. After finishing the course u ll be a Certified Hacker. The demand for Havkers is increasing as the corporates need to have a secured system. So they call for a hacker n test the system. Think in India its not so common but its an demanding job

In the original sense of the word, hacking means any activity involving the keyboard. Programmers in the early days of computing would proudly call themselves hackers because they "hacked" the code into their computers. In the last couple of years (also thanks to various movies etc.), the term has generally been used for unauthorized access to computer systems. I am not going to give you tips how to do it, the only thing I'm going to say is that people concerned with internet security have an interest in knowing how hacking works as well because it's necessary to know about it as a defense as well (if you know how a burglar works, you also learn how to secure your house). So my advice would be to look for security mailing lists and forums.

Hacking is the gaining of unauthorized access to someone else's system. The hacker has caused the computer to perform a function.
Why should you hack? You can get into real trouble for it. If you really think hacking tools can help you, I can assure you that 90% of them are keyloggers or trojans that allows others to compromise your system.

Hacking is simply an art of prblem solving. Hacking is done by Hackers and there are two types of Hackers.
Ethical Hackers
Illegal Hackers
Ethical Hackers are the ones who work in software companies like Microsoft, IBM etc to correct faults of their own product. Microsoft develops an Operating System and hands it over to the Ethical Hackers, whose tasks are to break into the system, using loop holes. Until these loop holes are eliminated, the ethical hackers have to break into the systems.
While the other types of hackers are the illegal ones, who compromise others privacy by attacking their resources. They may, crack passwords, hack into network systems, encrypt files, or do other major disasters which brings losses to the organization. But, even illegal hackers can be categorized into several categories. There are hackers who break into system just for the fun of doing them and some break for financial gains etc.
To know about hacking, you have to follow the basic hacking course, which are available at mot institutes and universities or you can simply browse for e-books on hacking and learn the art. Whatever it is, make sure you do not break into major systems cause it takes them only minutes to identify who you are.

I agree to what John K has said. Hacking and Cracking are two different things! Cracker is a person who causes damage. Even scrip kiddies can cause damage! A person who can manipulate programs and softwares to improve its efficiency or security is a hacker!
It is indeed a term to be respected

Hacking , the world famous word . The actual meaning of hacking is
" to cut something with rough, heavy blows ".But today this term is almost be computer/network related . It means that to break some
comp./network's protection system and accessing the contents that are not for share. We can hack by few fundamental methods , such as ...
a-> by inserting some commands to the system depending upon the O.S. by confusing the system .(By DOS command , UNIX command,SOLARIS command etc.)
b->by inserting some programme (Ex. C/C++ programme , pearl prog. etc.)But here the java , owl , ruby is used very rare for their powerful garbage-collection method & pointer/reference & inheritance concept.
c->by using pl/sql command.
d->by sending personal virus, spyware and e-mail (this method is most powerfull to crack yahoo/hotmail e-mail account ).
e->by inserting netwoking rules & so on...
But be carefull ,today one hacker is identified by as "penetration
tester" to testing the shield of sequrity of some system . So hacking is good .
On the otherside, the term "cracker" is much more dangerous , cause they actually crack the world ...
IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT HACKING , then first study about networking and it's protocol ,then learn deeply operating system architecture and its protection/sequrity and it's shell(One good book about O.S. is "galvin") And atlast , reed any good "memory - handling" language like c/c++.But if you want to hack
database then study DBMS & PL/SQL(a good book is "Korth") . Be a good hacker is serious job, man. So be hacker but don't be cracker (cracking is a cyber-crime) .
