Some people have addictive personalities. It may depend on people's reasons for taking the drugs, and what is going on around them. I think people who are unhappy with their lives might get addicted because they use drugs as a form of escape from their life.

Some of the misconceptions are amazing.
First, if you ever find the absolute complete answer, call me first and we will both make a billion dollars. The truth is that no one really knows, and there might be any number of answers.
One might be genetics. Different people have different reactions to drugs just from the way they are built. Some people may have an inborn trait that gives them more pleasure from drugs, or they may be more naturally "nervous" and simply feel better if they are taking something to calm them down. (That is a very simple layman's explanation.)
Another answer lies in emotions. I have a doctor friend who has done a lot of research into it and has come to the conclusion that nearly all regular drug use (alcohol and tobacco included) is an attempt to self-medicate psychological problems. For example, female addicts tend to have a very high incidence of being sexually abused as children. Male addicts tend to have had a high incidence of absent or authoritarian fathers.
Another factor may be general antisocial tendencies. Male addicts tend to have a history of crime even before they become addicts.
For some others, it may be that they were just having so much fun that they got their body chemistry screwed up and now can't feel normal without them.
For some it may be a simple desire for entertainment in the face of boredom. For example, before 1900, the most common addict in the US was a middle-aged, rural-living, white female. The probable reason was that they lived out in the middle of nowhere, without much entertainment so they took drugs to deal with the boredom. A more modern woman in the same situation might be into TV and Twinkies.
For others, it may be a combination of these factors, as well as other factors.
For those who do become addicts, all treatment methods seem to work about the same. About five percent of the addicts will mature out of their addiction (just get tired of it and stop) every year.

I believe alot of it is heridetary as in alcoholism. Alot has to do with
the chemical makeup of your body. Everyones body reacts differently to drugs. What one thing may make some high may make another person tired. There is a physical and metal part of addiction. It can be part of ones personalitly to be an addictive person. Some of these things are out of a persons control and they need to recognize it and take the appropriate actions, by avoiding these things.

I think it's the personality. Some people are inclined to rely on an exterior source for their well-being, dare I say like religion, sex, drugs. Others use such stuff to enhance the lifestyle they already enjoy.

You are mistaken. Sex never becomes boring even at 60 plus, and it always thrills. Maybe there is a reduction in the frequency, but it remains the same as it was in the beginning. I don't understand how it becomes interesting after seeing others. After all, it is all in the mind.
