I think its different for every couple. I was in a 3.5 year relationship in which we had some great sex. She liked to be on top face to face with a pillow under me. I liked that too, it left us open to kiss and feel each other. her hands could be behind her (and on me) or on the headboard. My hands could be on her hips or also against the headboard. All that makes "cowgirl" a great position.
If you have been with the guy for a long time and you are getting used to the "norm", you can always try something new. There are a few good ways to explore new things. I'm of the opinion that a guy is stimulated more by his sex partners stimulation. therefore if he were to explore your entire body with fingers tongue lips whatever I'm sure he would find spots that you don't even know about yet. and of coarse let the real fun begin!
