Yes, of course. It's the law of supply and demand. There are currently far too many cars on the road. If demand is not suppressed by pricing then the country will grind to a halt. And don't say build more roads - all that will do is increase car use even more until the new roads fill up and equilibrium is reached again.
For many years pricing has been used as a policy to damp down demand on the railways. This is why any ticket bought before 0930 in the morning Mon-Fri is MUCH more expensive. This is because this is the period of peak demand when facilities are stretched to the limit.

We pay to have them built with taxes on fuel, taxes on using the road taxes on taxes. So NO we shouldn't have to. When will the fools that are the British public learn they are NOT creating a tidal wave of pollution with every step they take. Industry creates 90% of all pollution, so why is it they don't get targeted so fanatically? Ans. Because they earn money and the government has one concern only, MONEY. That's all this environment scapegoat is, a money exercise. Yes we need to be careful just in case we are contributing to climate change, but the world has been around for millions of years and has seen off far greater dangers than a few conservatives in they're Motorised pepper-grinders!!

We do, and through the nose at that!

Petrol is extortionate and road tax continues to creep ever upwards. MPV's are about to be banded in with the 4x4's soon and once again the family will be footing the bill for the governments general financial incompetence.

Our road system should be second to none-we pay far more in road and fuel taxes than any other country, we're smaller than most and yet our roads are always in turmoil-it defies logic, (well, until you put T. Blair, raconteur, into the equation that is).

The latest 'let's pay per mile' idea is OK in principle, BUT, what about men/women who work away from their families all week but don't get company transport? My husband used to do a 400 mile round trip weekly to come home and see his family, that would not have been financially viable with a per mile charge on top of petrol-and let's not fool ourselves that there would be any allowances made for similar circumstances.

The truth is that this government glean more than enough money to keep our roads in tip top shape but they're too inept to use it effectively-to suggest that we pay to use an amenity that we've all paid for three or four times over already is not only absurd it's tantamount to taking money with menaces!

I dont mind the idea of paying for the use of highways, if they knocked off the road tax, and the tax they put on petrol. It wouldnt be so bad if the money that they did get from drivers , was spent on the roads, or used to improve things on the roads but it doesnt seem that way

you already do. It's call fuel tax.

What you need to do is pass legislation mandating that that money fanc ONLY be used for road upkeep and development, and not for any other programs. They'd drop the tax down more reasonable and tax something else so everyone woudl pay it.

Unfortunately massive taxiation is the price you must pay for living in a socialist state. Once government gets out of the business of administering business and charity, you might have half a chance..

I'll bet you if they ever do go for this daft idea, there'll be an annual "administration fee" in place of car tax.

Have you noticed how the terms "Road Tax" and "Road Fund Licence" have quietly disappeared from official-speak? Now it's just "Car Tax".

I'm also prepared to bet that someone will come up with a gadget to beat the "spy meter" within days of it being implemented.

Jammers are easy, actually, must give it some thought . . .

We do. We pay road tax, we pay ridiculous insurance premiums, we pay a ludicrous amount of fuel duty which is itself taxed by the addition of VAT....a tax on a tax!
Then of course there's the annual rip-off for an MoT certificate.
And to cap it all everything has to be paid for out of our after-tax wages.
On to of all that the damn thing is depreciating by at least £2000 per year and will need to be replaced sooner rather than later because in spite of spiralling maintenance costs in a very short time it will be a worthless, rusty pile of junk.

And they think making us pay even more for the privilege will help them win the next election?
Dream on.

Car tax totals some 40 Billion a year of which less than 6 Billion is spent on the roads.
How many times do we have to pay to avoid so called public transport which is nowhere near where we want to start from, does not go to where we want to be, is expensive, dirty and liable to give you various diseases and parasites - as well as the Government.
