Scotland and Wales are 2 Proud Nations, and should be members of the United Nations and the European Union in their own right.

Firstly it would not be England that has the right to say no, it would be The United Kingdom

Personally all i think it will do is create a bigger divide than is already there, but it is inevitable that independance will be given,

dont forget though that although Scotland is a seperate country, Wales and England are not!
That is why there is no Welsh flag as part of the Union Flag/UnionJack

England and Wales are a single unit, although this has started to change with the introduction of the Welsh Assembly

This is a delicate issue.
Proud nations with a real identity.
It is up to the people to decide - that's what it's all about - democracy.
England is no longer England - so I do not understand all the fuss. Whats wrong with being part of the British Isles within Europe? It's a debatable subject & one where the populations of Wales & Scotland are clearly split.
The Prime Minister of so called "England" but actually Britain is often Welsh or Scottish as are many of the other top politicians.
Wellesley (Wellington) was Irish for example & prime minister at least twice.
If you think that Wales or Scotland would be better off seperate, then you should argue for it. I think it is a little sad that the Isles are not more together , they would be far stronger for it with or without Europe.

I am a proud Scotsman and I am very interested in this debate.

Most people have the idea that the Scots are bound to England against their will. This was the case hundreds of years ago when Edward Longshanks laid claim to the Scots throne and began a conflict that would last hundreds of years.

However, Scotland joined with England of its own free will in 1707 with the acts of union and created the nation of Great Britain. The parliaments of both England and Scotland were dissolved and a new one, formed of English and Scots MPs was formed on the site of England's former parliament.

It is a misconception to suggest that the Scots are the unwilling servants of the English.
However, it is a greater misconception to suggest that England are propping up the Scots who are 'lazy and benefit cheats'.
It is elitist and fails to recognise the fact that England gets far more in the way of investment than Scotland.

To the poster who was annoyed that there were Scots in English parliament: would you have a problem if an Afro-Caribbean had a seat in Parliament? A British citizen can stand for parliament no matter what their racial/cultural background. Its called democracy.

I'm Welsh-Irish on my mothers side, and proud to be so. However if a sizeable majority do not want independence then the question shouldnt arise, and when it comes to General Elections comparatively few vote for Plaid Cymru or the SNP. Therefore my answer is no! Scotland & Wales have equality and parity with England as part of the UK, and the UK is far stronger as it is. However if the majority voted for independence, then they should be given it, not that they ever will!

Where were you on July 1, 1999? That was the day of the opening of the Scottish Parliament. I was in Edinburgh that beautiful sunny day. The hope of the people of Scotland that I heard that day is that they would be given their independence eventually. But then again, why would the Queen (the biggest welfare recipient in the world) want to give up those taxes?

I think I'll go with precedence here. No. let's look at the civil war(of the US). the civil states had their own culture and still do today but unfortunately the empire of the USA had already made its stand in the global community so we were not allowed to break free from the US. although it isn't fair or right, the weaker countries of the world have always been subjected to the stronger ones which is why the ever growing empire of the USA is able to manhandle every small or medium size counrty in the world. Maybe ask this question again once England is taken over by the United States Empire. The USE will be in effect before the end of this century. The USE will replace the USA shortly as a world recognized state so you should still be alive to ask again. At least until you ask again.

If they seperated, then surely all of the joint regiments of the armed forces would have to also disband? They would have to remove themselves from the English parliament, any other joint educational and health services would have to be disolved. They would receive no funds from the English, and as most money appears to be generated in \London this could hit them hard.
I understand the national pride but seperating would be cutting their own nose off to spite their faces.
I do however think that all sporting teams/events should be seperate. I always think it's funny when someone loses they are Scottish/Welsh/English/NI etc. but if one of those other than the English win something, it's the British!

If that's what the people in those countries want - then so be it. Maybe then the political face of England will improve, since the number of Labour supporters will vastly decrease.

do you think that it's coincidence that the Labour party do not want Scotland to have it's own say?

Yes, if the Scottish and Welsh people want it I would be quite happy to dissolve the union. But then all Scots and Welsh MPs should be kicked out of the new English Parliament. It annoys me that they are in there now when they already have their own.
