First we will discuss as to what is a classical. Dr Samuel Johnson who brought down a dictionary of English words and classified them into a properly spoken language and gave it a glossary of words which were borrowed from French and Latin. This is how the Classical English language came into being.
The old age method of singing songs came to be known as Classical Music.
Indian Classical music has two schools - one is Carnatic Music and the other is Hindustani Music. Carnatic music is rendered in two languages i.e. Telugu mainly and Tamil. Hindustani music is rendered only in Hindi.
Carnatic musing is based on ragaas like Thodi, Bhairavi, Sindhu, Kalyani, etc. Same or similar such ragaas are also there in Hindustani music.
In Carnatic musing there is only one school like kirtanas (songs) written by Sant Thyagaraja, Appayya Dikshitar and one more exponent whose name I have forgotten.
In Hindustani music there are "gharanas". These gharanas are establish by leading exponents. Again in Hindustani music there are one or more varities like "Thumri" and the rest I do not remember right now.
Like I said in the 2nd para, Western classical music is similar.
Village songs, Ballards and songs written for certain dramas.
While village songs are more famous in the Americas, the Ballard, etc. are famous among the French and the Britain.
I think this much is suffice for you to differentiate as otherwise it will be a very lengthy discussion.

Nothing. Its much different cultures. Classics of their own cultural musics. Its just like what is a western movie classic and a mafia movie classic? They're both movies aren't they? Its just different genres. And oh yeah, the instruments are different as well.
