Its an external hard drive with 320Gb storage, and I plan to fill it with around 200Gb+ worth of data. If the hard drive goes through the xray machine will it corrupt the data inside the hard drive?

I'd ask the airline what they recommend.

The X-ray probably won't hurt the hard drive, but they should treat it more or less the same as they would a laptop. The last time I traveled I carried a laptop and they just made me turn it on to show it works.

Hello,

The answer is NO! in my opinion, why? because hard disk drives use a magnetic coating's on the disk platters.

Data is written to & from the disk using magnetism and x-rays have no effect on the magnetic coatings of the disk drives. In fact you might not know this but hard disk drives have cosmic rays pass straight through them all the time 24/7. These are particles emitted from the sun and its nuclear process's.

**Hard disk drives have to be kept (safe) away from anything that generates intense magnetic fields, such as electro magnets, electrical fields. Its anything magnetic brought into close proximity with the HDD that can inflict damage to the drive or data.

No problem at all. EVERYDAY thousands of people take laptops through airports and they have no problem. Now even their MP3 players and camera's have hard drives in them.
Even IF the X-ray machine was slighlty magnetic, it would not harm the HDD because its casing would act like a shield.

Neither x-rays will hurt or corrupt the data on your hard drive. With the new security regulations though, it might be better for you if you put it in your luggage.

I don't think that there will be any effect by sending a Hard Disk through x-ray. Anyway, to be on the safe side, wrap it with a carbon paper.

Due to new regulations you cant take the HDD in your Hand luggage but it wont be a problem if you put that in the luggage with HDD carrying case
you can also cover the HDD with an aluminium foil for protection!
I take my HDD so many times... no prob

The x-ray that the large luggage goes through is stronger, so I think it could be damaged by that. It's better to bring it in your carry-on. I think that they have to x-ray all carry-ons now, but you can ask the security officers this question.
