Good question indeed!!
My answer, an emphatic no. Self protection is an integral part of life ..... not just human beings, it applies to every kind of living beings.
However, under the influence of peak emotion, selfless moments are experienced by all human beings, although in varying degrees depending upon individual personality. During such moments, we do indulge in selfless acts too.
What we generally mean by calling anyone as selfless is merely that the person is considerate and concerned about others as well, and therefore is not utterly selfish or self seeking in nature.

We are all products of the universe from which we have evolved. Our actions are motivated by our genetic make up and previous environmental experiences. Any form of causation we might attribute to our own freewill is an illusion. We are puppets in a grand cosmic play, cogs in the vast machine of reality. What is your "self"? Do you really make choices or are your actions the mere result of the electro-chemical, humanoid, state machine that is you?
Pick a number 1 through 10. Got it? Now, if we were to rewind the universe to the exact moment before you read that sentence, would you have picked a different number? I don't think so. If that is the case, you can repeat that excercise for every decision you have ever made and every decision that anyone who has ever existed has made. No one is making decisions or being "self-full" or "self-less". There are really no selves, just parts of universe interacting blindly with one another based on the inital conditions of the system.

there are some great people like Mother Teressa of calcutta and other humans who spend their lives entirely for the poor community to give them some dignity and hope in life. Ther are many unsung heroes in this world who are selfless and will be never known to the world... but they are an absolute minority.... 99% of the humans are selfish in one way or the other ..some for survival, many for gain .Greediness has become the order of the day.... it takes all kinds of men to make this world...

I believe the term "selfless" is a bit of a misnomer. Everyone has a sense of self..and those who are very generous with their time, and efforts for charitable causes may indeed have more of a sense of who they are than your average sel-fish Joe.

Yes, my parents as well as others' have been definitely selfless. I think many good parents in principle and in practice in their everyday lives should be respected for their limitless care, love and contribution till their children can take care of themselves.

Yes, but I think it's extremely rare. And I think most so-called selflessness is just selfishness cleverly disguised.
