Or are you a "go with the flow" type person?

*sigh* Good question.

With my "acquaintances?" Definitely not. Which is kind of sad. You put little expectation into a friend you know little about. You definitely are game with going with the flow.

It's when you and your friend start sharing on a deeper level, you then come to expect that level of friendship with them on a more frequent basis. Does that mean you require a contract? Not exactly..... but then again.... the expectation seems to have been established. So when they arent' there for you or no longer share with you..... sure, you almost feel like it has been a 'breech of contract.'

I don't think my friendship requires a contract as much as open communication. I've always felt that if people say what on their mind, then all peoplewill know where they stand. Then there is no guessing or wondering or speculating or worrying. No contract necessary........no going back on expectations. Because as you talk and talk.... the expectations can continue to change along the way.

That way.... you go with the flow.... of words. :)

Deep question again.

If those are my only two choices, I will have to pick "go with the flow", because friendships develop at different rates, and to different levels.

I have a few friends that I would literally lay down my life for. I don't know or care if they would lay down their lives for me.

Friendship is different for everyone.

Usually my friendship develops over time, through shared experiences, to differing levels of friendship. But it starts at some nexus. Around and around it goes, and where it lands nobody knows, sort of like some wheel of fortune(not the game show).

I give up, this is a tough question. Friendship is a rose. At first it is closed up like a rosebud, but with the warm light and heat of the sun, opens and blossoms. Yes, roses go away sometimes, but there is that time when it is at it's most glorious.

Edit: I keep going back to Rousseau's Social Contract, which didn't work for government but was idealistic for interpersnal relationships, and think there is some sort of contract. Maryanne has a very good answer is this context.
