I had a dream the other night that I had a spider attached to my pinky toe. It was like it had grown into part of my toe, actually...ick. It was jet black with red markings on it. In my dream someone told me I should go to the doctor, but I kept putting it off even though it was bothering me. Finally, part of the spider crumbled off of my foot, but I remember feeling pretty grossed out. Does anyone have a good interpretation of this?? I like looking at dream dictionaries, but was wondering if anyone out there knew about dream themes, because this dream was a little disturbing to me...

You have to be careful about listening to other people's ideas of what your dreams may mean.

I have learned from experience that sometimes if you have no particular issues going on, your dreams are nothing more than the last few days' worth of stuff you've seen or heard mixed up and dumped out in a dream. Your mind has to come up with some kind of images if you're in the dream state, so it can come up with recent memories if it has nothing else.

Its possible you actually felt something irritating your toe while you slept, and your mind created the spider. (Have you ever had the thing where what's really going on physically gets brought into your dreams?)

Maybe people have talked about spiders recently. Maybe you stepped on something crumbly on the floor, and your mind "took note" of the crumbly feeling and later put it in the dream. (I've had what I thought were teeth dreams until I realized that when I eat Cheese Nips I subconsciously notice the feeling of chewing all the bits and pieces of the crispy crackers. My mind turned that feeling into teeth in the dream because I probably subconsciously thought it felt like teeth when I was chewing them.)

You probably know that poisonous spiders have the red markings. Maybe you've heard a news story about them being found on produce. Have you eaten produce recently? You could have been thinking about people talking about ticks and turned ticks into a spider in the dream.

My point is chances are the dream was nothing but a mixing up of things that your subconcious has noticed over a period of time and a dumping of them into a dream.

If you're in a time in your life when things are bothering you there's the chance they were coming out and that the dream meant a little more. I've found that when I've had issues that bother me my dreams have dealt with those issues by layers. The first dreams would obviously be about the thing bothering me. Then they'd be a little more difficult to figure out. In the end, the "way underneath" layer of issues were dealt with in a dream; but even then I figured out what they were. I've noticed they tend to be events/circumstances first, thoughts second, and feelings last (in terms of the layers issues are dealt with in dreams).

The style of interpretation I like was developed by Fritz Perls.

Everything in the dream represents you.

Describe the dream, out loud and in the first person, from the point of view of each element of the dream. In other words, maybe something like "I am the spider and I'm attached to her toe," or "I'm the doctor" or "I'm the foot."

In this technique, more often than not you wind up using words or phrases that have specific meaning to you.

Let me give you an example: A man was describing a dream about walking down a road with his friends; this dream always made him sad. He did all the elements until he got to the road, and said, "I'm the road, and my friends are walking all over me." He stopped and began to cry.

I used to have a recurring dream about visiting my parents in the museum, and they were mummies. I wound up with "We'd love to say hi to her but we're all wrapped up." (My parents were very busy during my childhood.)

If you see a spider, it means that someone hates you. No, it's true. If the spider fully went away, then it means that the person doesn't hate you anymore. However, if part of it went away, then the person hates you and likes you at the same time. Trust me, it may sound dumb, but it's true.

"The spider, via the horror movie and it's scuttling movement, is associated with all things scary and in dreams we can add deviousness to that list. More positively a spider can represent a perfectly woven pattern that both nurtures and protects us."

Something minor is bothering you but you refuse to do anything about it,you keep avoiding the issue, finally part of the problem falls away of its own accord but another part of your problem is stil there.

Looks like somtehing's bothering you.

It would be something important that you feel darkly towards. Fear looks associated.

You probably feel deeply within yourself that you can overcome/use this.

And that's my John Edwards opinion....
