First of all, if your in a burning building you want to stay as low to the ground as possible. If there is something you can use to cover your mouth, do so. Inhalation and fixation will get you before the heat does nine times out of ten. Also wrapping a cotton blanket around yourself will help protect you from burns. Avoid anything with Nylon, it will actually melt into your flesh!! Find the quickest and safest path to an exit. Be careful opening doors and windows. A sudden burst of oxygen may fuel the fire, kind of like back-draft. Don't be concerned with pets and belongings. Remember, your main concern is you and your families safety. As soon as you are safely outside, you need to contact the Fire Dept. and Ambulance if they have not already been dispatched. If you and your family do not have a fire escape plan, you may want to put one together. If you have a two story house like I do, rope escape ladders may be a wise investment. Fire is like everything in nature, it demands its own respect.
