My 11 year old sister asked for a MP3 player for Christmas. I dont want to buy a really expensive one because of the fact she might lose it or break it. Does anyone know of a good and affordable mp3 player?

Sansa e-series: reason majority of costs to mfg MP3 player is tied up in the flash memory. Which Sandisk, the manufacturer of the sansa players, is the original patent holder. Hence every other MP3 mfg has to pay higher costs for the memory (obviously this does not apply to the mini-drive players, but there are inherent drawbacks to these devices incl power consumption, weight and durability).

Ipods have the "cool" factor, they have a better appearance, none of the other mfg spend money on advertisement. Sandisk PR costs are minimal. Explains how they're able to offer 2GB flash player at costs 35-40% less than comparable Ipod 2GB player and also incl voice recorder, FM tuner, larger screen, ability to view photos and movies, and can run numerous file formats not limited to just Itunes. However, not as slick/pretty as Ipod player and slightly thicker. Sandisk offers up to 8GB player and expects to have 16GB shortly, they are the unquestionable leader in the memory field and have continued to drive prices lower.

Look at Amazon electronics best sellers, this Xmas season Sandisk MP3 players have been in 2-3 of 10 best sellers, although Apple's has had 5-7 of the 10 best sellers. Bear in mind Sandisk doesn't advertise. At a very minimum go to Best Buy make a side by side comparison, but for the money can't beat the Sansa, especially if you order on-line.

Good luck

Sandisk's are good. I got my 8 year old son one for Christmas. It holds 500 songs and it was only $30. Sandisk is well known technologywise. It's a good buy for a first time MP3 user.

I got a brand new MP3 for my 11 year old online. It was only $30 but seems to sound pretty good.
I found it here, www.cfgear.com.
