The ability to transport PEOPLE, INFORMATION,and GOODS accross vast landscapes in very short periods of time. Ability to deliver food to factory towns, and goods from factory towns to citys.

A country as big as ours needs is necessarily harder to link by rail than any one of Europe's. I wouldn't say it's the role of railroads, but certaintly it's one effect of rail system-building.
