In order to be licensed by the state you work in, you'll have to have a master's degree (in social work). This means you will enter a graduate school once you've finished four years of college. In college, you might want to study or major in psych, soc, or health administration. Knowing how the government works and about tax laws could help because a social worker often has to wade through all kinds of insurance and government paperwork that clients receive. Courses toward being a lawyer would help too.
You'll be able to get into child protection services, prevention of elder abuse, teaching, counseling, or working in schools. Best wishes!
