Mainly Dems think it is the responsibility of the Government to take care of the people and Republicans believe the Governments job is to provide the people with the opportunity to take care of themselves. Most Republicans are more willing to help the person needing help on the side of the road, while Dems think it is the Governments job. A study released this week says that Conservatives give more to charities then Liberals.

throughout history the meanings have changed, but currently republicans believe that government should be conservative. that is to say that it should only do those things that individuals cannot do for themselves. like build interstate highways, provide a common defense and system of currency.
democrats believe that the government should be liberal. that is to say that they should do whatever good they can do. like give poorer people money and food and housing.
both are well intentioned, but dont let anyone kid you they are very different.
democrats fear that republicans will not do enough to help the poor and minorities and Republicans fear that democrats will fail to do the basics by spreading things to thinly.

Personally I dont believe there is any difference in the type of person that is a hard line republican or democrat. Any person who bases their decision simply on party lines is an idiot in my book.
My opinion of a person is basely solely on their merits, qualification, experience, etc. I vote and/or support someone based on these criteria regardless of party affiliation.
Political parties are one of the biggest threats to our society. George Washington warned us about this, but unfortunately like 9/11 most people have forgotten or just dont care.

Dave Barry has a pretty good riff on the question that goes something like this (and despite being fiercely liberal I find this to be fairly accurate):
If you were stuck on the side of road with a flat tire, a Republican would know how to fix it, but wouldn't bother to stop to help you. A Democrat would stop to help, but would probably end up setting the car on fire.

It would depend on whom you ask.......there are many different types of Democrats (pro-labor, pro-trade, socially-liberal or conservative) as well as republicans (fiscal conservatives v. social conservatives). The differences often best are drawn out in individual campaigns, though for the national party platforms I would suggest accessing their websites. www.democrats.org, www.gop.org

Republicans are white supremacists, happy to exploit the Earth for their profit and have everyone suffer after them; Democrats are not quite that narrow-minded and obtuse.

There is no difference. They're both the same party---you could call it the Authoritarian Socialist Party of America.
