I think they turn the movie into a video game. :-D They don't even look like they're part of their surroundings. It's just an unfortunate popular trend. Other than LOTR and Harry Potter, they're not good. I think they should only use them if they are the absolute best they can be and the effect is either impossible otherwise or too expensive to with other methods. I've always loved effects mastered by the likes of Dick Smith, Rick Baker, Kevin Yagher, Howard Berger, Tom Savini, Screaming Mad George etc. They should go back to good old special make up effects. Movies need to have a good story and script. That would be a good combo. The order of priority should be story, script, acting and non CGI effects.

As soon as I started reading your question I thought of the star wars movies. The scene in the space bar with the alien band etc in the remastered movies just looked crap and unrealistic, the puppets were so much better. Basically CGI is slowly replacing anamatronics and special effects puppets and all the latex and make up and it's not as good, Some movies are full of action sequences that look more like cartoon than film. I think there will be a back lash against it at some point, there has too be. Just look at how many people agree with you here.

I think a great script makes a film, not just 'clever' visual trickery. A great story draws you in and keeps you there. Have to admit though I am looking forward to the movie interpretations of Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy. Can't imagine how they could manage to do a massive part of the story without CGI so it does have its place. I think it is over-used though and I don't know if you saw the tv show 'Prehistoric Park' (uk) this summer, but that made me laugh so much I couldn't believe anyone would take CGI seriously again.

Absolutely. Films these days are being ruined by extensive use of CGI. Although certain movies like Sin City benefit from the special look achieved by CGI in most other movies it is just used to much. I'm pretty sure actors are pretty sick of standing in front of a green screen trying to imagine the scene they are supposed to be in. Im not against touch ups with CGI, but let it look real please. I remember the Bond movie with Hailey Berry and it was utter crap. Although the Bond movies are as unrealistic as can at least they always looked "real", but that one was ruined by crappy CGI. On the other hand we wouldn't have so many fantasy and super heroe movies if it werent for the CGI but all in all I am fed up so please stop using unnecesary CGI.

Ah, FINALLY -- someone who makes sense -- and YES, I do AGREE that CGI Special Effects is being used as a COVER for a LACK of story and no real script for the movies in the last several years.
That is why I VOTE to NOT go to the theaters or purchase ANY of the recent movies on DVD .. they are NOT any good -- no story, the actors/actresses are NOT good, and the whole movie is NOT worth spending money on.

I agree with your point that some movies just use rubbish unconvincing cgi to cover for a lack of story but they can be used to create a breathtaking, wholly convincing world. For example Sin City was a fantastic film driven by story and characters but with a completely unique look achieved through extensive use of cgi. Therefore a must conclude that cgi has its place in movies but some choose to abuse

I think there is a place for them and some of them you don't even realize. Titanic used CGI. I really would like to see more old school animated full length Disney features of the caliber of Beauty and the Beast or Cinderella.

Films today seem to be rated on the amount of fx in them!! forget the story, acting, etc there just driven by fx!!.I prefer a movie with story line, something i dont know how it will end.I'm afraid it's down to an old saying of mine"people are easily entertained" (i'm NOT)

If a measure of a person's intelligence is how much he or she agrees with you, you are Einstein, my friend. Bless you. You've captured a lot of my concern about current movies.
