It is nearly impossible to breed Bala Sharks (Barbus melanopterus, Puntius melanopterus, Systomus melanopterus) in an aquarium setting under 100 Imperial Gallons.

Little is understood about why they have such difficulties with proliferation other than hormones which are responsible for triggering their wild breeding habbits are less abundant in captive specimens. Southeast Asian Fish farmers operating mainly with aquacultures or ponds successfully breed Bala sharks with hormone therapy.

Other examples of captivity having physical effects would be the Killer whale losing the firmness of its dorsal fin while in captivity.

Its not that Bala Sharks cannot breed in captivity. Its just that they need enough space and almost natural like conditions. They also require constant running water and need to reach their maturity which is not easy to tell in captivity.

There are many fish that cannot be bred in captivity. This is usually because people do not allow them to be kept in appropriate sized tanks, and we cannot provide them a natural enough setting such as water temperature, water minerals, water pH, water changes that would happen naturally in nature.

It is likely that they need VERY specific elements to breed.
