The guitar sounds for System Of A Down and Nirvana are completely different. If you want to control multiple tones, you could do it with a machine or a pedal - depending upon how much you want to spend. (Pedals are cheaper.)

You should find a tone you like and stick with it - make it your own.

If you get too bogged down with copying the tones of several guys, you won't progress in your playing and for most of the bands you listed, they could have spent a little more time practicing if you know what I mean.

System Of A Down has a really good guitar player. If you listen closely, there is a lot going on and in different time signatures. He is really underrated.

Do you already have an amplifier? Many amplifiers have a distortion setting. You can buy a single effects pedal for I dunno maybe $70 at the very least and crappiest, or you could spend a couple hundred on a zoom box or something- I would recommend an FX pedal with at least 3 different nobs, so you can tweak with the distortion and stuff. Here's a link to the guitarcenter site: if you scroll down on the left, you can actually search by price range:

get a distortion pedal max the distortion out and then over drive your amplifier that should give you a solid wall of distortion.

or an amp/effects emulator ( yamaha do one for about $ 200...)
go to a music shop and ask.

oh, and get an amp and turn all the switches on, and all the dials to full.

That'll do it.
