I got one for a gift about 9 months ago. They're advertising is so misleading. 'no contracts' it says in big letters. In way smaller text, you find out if you go with just buying minutes, the least you can do is buy 60 minutes for $20 every two months. That's over 30 cents a minute - not very good.

Mine has worked for the most part, but beware. I just checked on the internet, lots of complaints about it. And read this to see what someone who works in their customer service dept says -

What's been your experience with them? Any suggestions on any other low cost cell phones? I hardly ever use mine. Thanks.

My mom has a tracfone, and I think it's the biggest waste of money ever. Cell phones with contracts aren't much better. According to a former professor of mine, America charges the most outlandish prices for cell phone usage compared to other countries especially in Europe. But I would have to say if you HAVE to have a cell, you should go for one with a contract and get the lowest amount of minutes you can because it'd be far more worth it than a tracfone.

I used Tracfone for about 2 years in New York City and I've been happy with them. Their minutes are expensive but if you look on ebay you'll find tons of sellers have them for much cheaper. I used T-Mobile now because they're cheaper and once you buy a total of $100 worth of minutes you become a gold rewards member and then minutes are even cheaper.
