For some of the really early stuff-
Something by The Velvet Underground or The Stooges, and of course Kick Out The Jams by MC5. I'd suggest the Clash or the Damned, but you said not as well known, so...
New York Dolls- The New York Dolls (I don't know how well known they are, but they're good).
Wild Gift- X (X kicks ***)
Talking Heads: 77- The Talking Heads
That’s Life- Sham 69
The Scream- Siouxsie and the Banshees (A little more towards the gothic end of things. Bauhaus is also good for gothic stuff.)
Unknown Pleasures- Joy Division (technically post punk, but then anything past '77 is)
Permanent- Joy Division (Another one...)
Cut- The Slits (One of my favorites, but if you only want guy bands, don't buy it)
Public Image- Public Image Ltd. (John Lydon's- aka Johnny Rotten's- band after the Sex Pistols)
Metal Box- Public Image Ltd.
The Dignity of Labour-The Human League
The Modern Dance- Pere Ubu
Y- The Pop Group (They're amazing. Especially "She Is Beyond Good and Evil". Make me want to do tribal dances.)
Live at the Witch Trials- The Fall (Pretty good)
The Second Annual Report of Throbbing Gristle- Throbbing Gristle (Brit slang for erect dick, apparently. Weird as hell, and again, not so much punk as... well, weird as hell.)
Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables- Dead Kennedys
Damaged- Black Flag
Bad Brains OR Black Dots- Bad Brains
First 2 7 s- Minor Threat
Living in Darkness- Agent Orange

Early AFI is punk, there is not any doubt approximately it. As for punk interior the mainstream, i might say that upward thrust against is punk and that they have completed incredibly nicely on mainstream radio and MTV. NOFX gets airplay right here, you may inform your close by station to step as much as the plate and play some. Pennywise i might say interior reason mainstream too. it form of appears like they play each and every 365 days right here in Phoenix on the close by 'option' radio station pageant and that i be attentive to they get airplay on the radio. EDIT: in spite of the undeniable fact that the poster above me has some thrilling factors his analogy isn't the terrific. interior the 70's the international wasn't virtually as related as that's immediately. Airfare is greater value-effective, holiday regulations could be greater lax and the internet exists. it is ordinary for issues to unfold be attentive to mouth on the cyber web and if it is shown that a band has adequate of a following in a distant u . s . then the band does no longer be unreasonable for traveling there. apart from you're fact approximately breaking the perfect 40 isn't maximum outstanding the two. Rancid has completed it the two with singles and album revenues. I evaluate them a punk band and that i think of maximum different punks or those that like punk might too. The intercourse Pistols and The conflict did it too.

Buy any Crass album, or any Conflict album, and learn.
Sid Sings is a terrible live album released so he could get money for heroin after the Pistols split at Wonderland. Avoid like George the Ebola Monkey.
Yeah, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables by the DKs...immaculate...

For a great 5* star punk album, check out The Distillers "Coral Fang".....yes it's a newer album (2003?) but it's worth your time.
Otherwise I'm guessing you've already discovered the rest of the worthwhile 70s british punk, if not check out The Buzzocks "Singles Going Steady"!

Ever thought of trying something totally out there? If so, how about this compilation Swedish punk from 78 to 1980? It's pretty darn good, particularly if you're into the first wave of punk.
Check out Svenska Punkklassiker:

Minor Threat's "Out of Step" album is by far the best I have ever heard. There is also Black Flag's "Slip It In" and of course, edging toward the more mainstream, is Suicidal Tendencies' two albums "Join The Army" and their self-titled release.

You also might want to check out the UK Subs and Exploited. Crass is another great band that fits the mold.
