Chamomile Tea works well. Or some lavender bath splash dabbed on your upper lip helps relax you very well. The scent of lavender is very relaxing. I currently have a lavender spray that I use on my pillow.

There are a number of different things you can try.

Don't drink coffee or cola drinks in the afternoon or evening. The effect of the caffeine can last for several hours.

Have hot milk or a drink made with milk just before you go to bed. Milk contains tryptophan, which makes you drowsy.

Sprinkle your pillow with lavender oil, or take a warm bath with lavender oil in it - or both, if you like the smell!

If you can, keep your bedroom just for sleeping (and cuddling, of course, if you a partner!). Don't do work in there, or watch TV, use a computer, or anything else that is stimulating to the mind. Eventually, that will teach your brain to associate that room with relaxing and nothing else.

Working on the computer just before bed isn't a good idea, it also stimulates your mind too much.

If you believe in feng shui, it's important to calm the "chi" in a bedroom. That means no mirrors (or cover them when you go to bed). In particular, never have mirrors that face each other - the life force will bounce from mirror to mirror and keep you awake all night. If you have a TV in the room (which you shouldn't, of course!), cover that at night too.

Keep a notebook by your bed. If you are being kept awake because you are fretting over a problem, sit up and write it all down. Once it is down on paper, you will find it easier to set aside until morning.

I have had my share of not sleeping! I have found that taking one or two Tylenol PM is a great help. I take them with a drink of hot water and then go soak in a hot bath. The hot water helps them dissolve faster and kick in faster as well, and the bath relaxes as well as helps to move the tylenol through the system. I hope this helps at least a little.

Try reading a book before going to bed, it may help. Clear your mind from stress before going to sleep. When I have test going on, I can't sleep because I worry about the test too much.

Try reading a really boring book or magazine.Science journals work best for me... if you have 8 or more hours to devote to sleep, then try taking a sleeping pill. Over the counter sleeping aids work well.

I'm a big fan of Melatonin - you can get it at any health food stores and most natural grocery stores. Don't worry - it is not your traditional sleeping pill. Melatonin is a naturally produced substance in your brain. It is great for curing jet lag.
