Yeah they earn a lot from advertisers who pays a lot to Yahoo just to place an AD anywhere in yahoo site.
There are many types of ad schemes such as PPC (Pay per click), it means if some click on the ad (which is on yahoo) and goes to that ad site and surfs on it then The ad company pays Yahoo for it as the visitors of that ad company are increasing and gaining popularity at the same time.
You can too earn money by placing an PPC ad on your website too.

See the advertisements? Every time somebody clicks on it, that company pays Yahoo. Also, finding ways to give people a reason to come back to Yahoo web site will generate more revenue.

They don't... at least not much at the moment, but eventually, (after they've acquired enough proven traffic), they'll have advertisers paying them to advertise on the site.
