I've been taking birth control (a pill) for over a month now and I was wondering when it would be safe to have sex without a condom?... I think my doctor said 3 months but you know how doctor's are... just trying to be careful and make sure so they say wait as long as possible.. But what do you all think? Any advice is appreciated.

Someone mentioned something about being overweight. I am overweight so how does this change the BC's effectiveness?

Oh and for those of you wondering, I am in a serious and trusting relationship. I have only had sex with this one guy in my entire life. We've both been tested and we're clean. We've had sex before without condoms but didn't continue long enough for him to ejaculate.

Read your pill information pamplet. It should say something like 7 to 14 days. Doctors often tell women longer because they assume that their patients are too stupid to take the pill at the exact same time everyday without first developing a habit. The manufactuers information is what you can believe. Why? If it were medically incorrect information, there would be law suits upon law suits!
So, the basic rule is 7 days (in North America/Europe) or 1 day if starting the pill on the very first day of your period or 14 days (in paranoid Austrialia). You can have condom free sex right now without the worry of pregnancy (99% effectiveness) given that you are not on or recently have been on antibiotics, herbal medications, anti-seizure medications/certain mood stabilisers or overweight. Remember, the pill does not protect against STI's, so be sure that you and your partner(s) are trusted and free from STI's. Have fun!
EDIT: Re: Overweight. There is a debated possibility that the absorbtion of the hormones into the blood stream may not be as strong in people who are very heavy. Some studies say "no this doesn't happen" othter studies say "it may happen". There is a study to prove everything especially when research is insufficient. At any rate, it doesn't seem that the effectiveness is reduces so much that taking birth control pills is pointless. I'm just not sure that 99% effective is accurate for overweight persons.

Hello there how are you? You should have got an instruction booklet in the packet that your pills came in? I would suggest reading that as the time varies depending on the dose of progesterone/estrogen in the tablets. I dont think it would be 3 months, usually only a week or so. I dont want to lecture you, im sure your a very sensible girl, but i would suggest taking the pill only if your in a serious /trusting relationship, Using the pill for causal sex can be riski with STD's and HIV. If you didnt get the information booklet with your packet of pills, maybe ring the clinic nurse at your Doctors and ask her. ??
Good luck with it

If the birthcontrol is first taken at the correct time, either the first day of your period or the first sunday, then it should be effective within 7 days...so just make sure to use protection. If it is not started at that time, then you need to use protection or a backup for 1 month. The birthcontrol came with instruction that will list all this info for you as well..

Three months is way too long..I don't think that's correct. I've heard of the most one month. BUT I have been taking Desogen and my docotor and the pill packet says it only takes one week! So she said to make sure to use a back up (condom) for the first week.

It depends on the pill and when you started taking it. He most likely said 3 months because he is not sure he has you on the right dose of hormones. See, when the BCP functions correctly it supresses ovulation, and as long as it is taken correctly continues to do so. What that means is the many accidental pregnancies you hear of are most likely, but not entirely, due to the hormone dosage being incorrect or the person using them incorrectly. So, wait 3 months. He can hang on and use alternative methods til then, and if not he aint the guy for you because he does not respect your body.

i agree with pie pie pie 100% i'm a pill user and i am 1st day starter. and 1st day starters don't even need back up protection. others wait up to 7 days. others one month. check with the package insert. all the information you needed is in that insert. also check online regarding the brand you are taking.
in any meds you take inside your body, please read carefully the information given by the manufacturer, especially when it comes to birth control. it's better safe than sorry.

when you start taking contraceptive pills in the third or fifth days of your period, theres nothing to worry about, its safe as long as you take your pills regularly every morning or before bedtime until you finish the pack. i dont think you have to wait that long. i was in community health centers for long and do pre-natal care, post natal and family planning. you're safe dear. no need rubber not unless you really need safe sex. trust me

ok so your in a relationship with him and he's your first and only, youve been tested, ok think about this....
condoms help to prevent STD's and HIV. what if he cheats on you, even if its once, he gets it from her and he gives it to you. how many times have you been tested?
getting tested isnt about going once and you will be clean forever. after your first test you need to go back after 3-6 months to be tested again.
My point : "ALWAYS USE A CONDOM"
