41weeks 1st pregnancy, my waters possibly broke (2 flase alarms at the hospital already) i dont have a doctor just a bunch of different OB's. I was just curious if there is a specific way i can lay to get the babys head from the birth canal enough to see if there is amniotic fluid comming out instead of some false discharge. any help is appreciated (i'd go to a hospital but with all the false times i wanna be sure. its 12:30 at night and theres an ice storm outside so i dont wanna go unless nessary)

you don't want to move the baby's head from the birth canal, you'll have trouble if he doesn't go back and it is labour..
Just get some rest. When it's time, you'll know sweetheart.
Best of luck.

Go to the hospital, and request that a "fern" test be done. My daughter went to the hospital twice ... like you, and they told her that her water hadn't broke. The third time, she called me ... I went to her house and examined her. Although it was an extremely slow leak ... it was now brownish in color.

I immediately took her to the hospital and demanded that they call our family doctor (we usually have no choice, but to be examined by the doctor that happens to be on call). Our family doctor came in and examined her, while asking me several questions. He did a "fern" test ... then immediately told the nurse to arrange for a Medi-vac to transport my daughter to the nearest city ... which was Edmonton.

On my daughters two prior visits to the hospital, IT WAS amniotic fluid leaking. So, for the past week or more ... she had a very minimal amount of amniotic fluid left. My little grandson had had a bowel movement in-utero ... and it went into his lungs. It was touch and go for the first few days ... his little lungs could hardly stand the infection.

Go to the hospital now hun ... it doesn't matter, even if it is another false alarm. It's better to be safe ... than sorry. I wish you the best ....

Ok, here are a few things you can try. Walk around. When your water is broken it will continue to leak until you deliver. It will be thin and clear, just like tap water. It has no real odor to it, doesn't smell anything like urine. You will probably have to change your pads a few times because of all the leaking, if not, then it's probably just normal discharge.

You must not live near the hospital if you don't want to go in. I must live near you because I am in the middle of the ice storm now...it took me twice as long get home from work tonight.

Is there a good bit of fluid? Is it clear? If yes then it probably broke, also are you having any contractions? If not you're probably ok to wait, but if they start happening you better go, better to be safe than sorry, right? Usually the first pregnancy takes a while so I'd wait and see if you're contraction start. Usually when the water breaks you feel like you peed yourself, theres a good bit. If theres any blood, then thats a good sign it broke. Most pregnancys the women have contractions and then the doctor has to breaks their water, that happened with all my kids!

Determining accurately if your water is broken is more difficult than you would think. The most accurate way is for the doc or midwife to insert a speculum and look to see if fluid is coming out of the cervix. You can't do that to yourself. Also, if your water did break, you really don't want to be ANYONE to be sticking fingers and stuff up you - that is what causes infections. I suggest being patient. If your water really did break you will probably continue to leak. Change pads frequently. Most women will begin labor contractions within a day.

This has been my experience though, as far as women THINKING their water MIGHT have broken (and I've been a midwife for a long time!): If you only THINK it broke, it probably didn't. (And most women do not begin labor with the water breaking first anyway.)

Watery discharge can be just that - copious amounts of watery discharge. It can also be urine leaking. One quick way to know if it is urine is to blow-dry wet panties or pad and smell. If it smells like dried pee - it is.

From what I'm told if you are constantly having to change your underware then you may have broke your water. Just rest a while and check every couple of hours (which I'm sure you're going to the bathroom about that much anyway :) ) and if you are soaked each time then I'd go to the hospital. Otherwise, I think you're fine.

my waters didnt break with my first until i stepped in the hospital door. my second labours waters broke as his head emerged. Are you having contractions? If yes then at 41 weeks you are probably in labour if you arent in labour then tell them to get the baby the hell out.:-)
