Try the manual process listed here, but many times these programs I recommend can remove the harder to remove trojans and viruses. When you run the spyware and virus checkers, you HAVE TO BE OFFLINE, AND you need to restart the computer WHILE the programs are running. OTHERWISE, they sometimes can not be removed. Disable all other software except these.
You need these: Trendmicro Housecall, Spybot Search and Destroy and AVG Free Antivirus.
NOTE: Get updates first, THEN disconnect from the Web when you run these programs, then restart, do NOT CONNECT to the Web yet, and run them again. Don't turn off SpyBot when you turn off the system. When at trendmicro, select "Scan Now It's Free"

depends on the virus. Some viruses can reconize anti virus software and avoid a scan. Do you have anti virus software. If so run a virus scan to clean it. If not check with your ISP (internet service provider) and see what they have available. If you dont have any protection invest in one that runs a scan on install or starup. doing that should keep a virus from reconizing any threat to it. Also try downloading adaware from lava soft. its a free download and good for finding ad software and some viruses. hope this helps

That virus has to be removed manually.
1: Close the IE browser. Log out messenger / Remove Internet Cable.
2: To enable Regedit
Click Start, Run and type this command exactly as given below: (better - Copy and paste)
REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
3: To enable task manager : (To kill the process we need to enable task manager)
Click Start, Run and type this command exactly as given below: (better - Copy and paste)
REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
4: Now we need to change the default page of IE though regedit.
Start>Run>Regedit
From the below locations in Regedit chage your default home page to google.com or other.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
HKEY_USERS\Default\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Just replace the attacker site with google.com or set it to blank page.
5: Now we need to kill the process from back end. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del
Kill the process svhost32.exe . ( may be more than one process is running.. check properly)
6: Delete svhost32.exe , svhost.exe files from Windows/ & temp/ directories. Or just search for svhost in your comp.. delete those files.
7: Go to regedit search for svhost and delete all the results you get.
Start menu > Run > Regedit >
8: Restart the computer. That’s it now you are virus free.

If you know where the virus is, it's just a matter of deleting it off your system (it may be in Temporary Internet Files) otherwise, download AntiVirus software or go to:
http://security.symantec.com
for an online scan of your system.

Just know that of you follow the advice of "classic," you are messing with your registry. If you don't know what you're doing in the registry, you can cause some serious damage to your programs or even your operating system. You are taking the advice of someone you don't know. Of course, "classic" may be right... but how do you know?

If you reformat the hard drive then everything is wiped, including: personal files, applications, software, games, pictures, viruses, malware. And anything in between.
