The "clap" is a common term for Chlamydia, also scientifically known as Non-gonoccal Urethritis.

Symptoms/Diagnosis: Symptoms include pelvic pain, discharge, often symptoms are subclinical (that means not seen or felt). Pelvic scrapings may show inclusions in host cells (that only makes sense to microbiologists like me). Flourescent antibodies may be used to diagnose disease (lab procedure). Long term complications can include sexual dysfunction (you can't get it up), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID often in females), sterility (non-motile sperm or scarring of the urethra), blindness, increased risk of cervical cancer in females.

Causative agent/Contributing factors: Most common cause is the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. This is a very common STD (sexually transmitted disease). MALES ARE OFTEN ASYMPTOMATIC (means you have no symptoms) and males often serve as carriers.

Transmitted by: can ONLY be transmitted by sexual intercourse. 800,000 cases reported to the CDC per year.

Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is done through antibiotics and treating both sexual partners to prevent recurrance. Antibiotics include: tetracycline and erythromycin.

However, if you are experiencing symptoms such as burning, or painful urination, or a pus like discharge from the penis, you may have Gonorrhea. Treatment for gonorrhea includes antibiotics as well, which is usually ceftriaxone as the drug of choice.
