It takes place in the future. The characters uncover a 20th-Century house and interpret the objects they find. Really, they MISINTERPRET the objects they find. That's all I remember about the story. A teacher read it to my class in the 1980's, and I remember it had wonderful illustrations.
Thanks for any ideas.

I'm not absolutely certain this is the book you're looking for, but there is a scene like that in the 2nd book in the Mortal Engines series, "Predator's Gold". There is a sort of museum in the story where ordinary items from our present are mistakenly thought to be of high value ... like baking foil, or blank CDs (referred to as seedys), for example. Sorry, no, but this does sound familiar... sort of like someting I might have heard a teacher read years ago.

I don't know, but I'll definitely keep track to find out if someone else does.
