Funny you should ask.

My degree is in Art History. It's given depth to all the work I do (I'm a professional artist).

I'm also a restorationist (specializing in works on paper), and have written two books.

HOWEVER, the real reason I switched majors from Fine Art to Art History was the horror I felt the day I saw an art student roll a truck tire that had been drenched with yellow paint across a canvas and call it art. Right then, I knew I was in the wrong college.

You could major in Art History because you want this major for a general Liberal Arts degree, and you especially want to know more about Art and Art culture.
A college degree is not necessarily to learn a technical trade for an occupation, but rather a Liberal Arts degree is to learn to think, evaluate and understand one's culture in a more sophisticated and mature way.

The most common reason people choose art history is because it is more credible than just getting an art degree.

In many fields a major just isn't important. The employer just want you to have a degree in something.
