From 1783 to 1789 the United States operated under terms of the Articles of Confederation. Simply put, the Articles established that each of the states were allied to each other for purposes of defense. Although there was a Congress during this period, there was no true federal government, since the states had not determined the need for one. Obviously this system didn't work well, and in 1789 the Constitution was drafted and ratified, creating the first true government for the United States of America.

After the Revolution, we had the short-lived Articles of Confederation. That set-up did, however give the states a great deal of independence.

We were already beginning to feel the difference between being an American Colonist and a British subject. All that distance helped,as well as our being treated as second-class citizens to the eyes of King George.
