Most people think the war was about Slavery,,,, thats rubbish.. if you read the Emancipation Proclamation.... it did (Not) free the slaves from people that owned them in the North!!! Even the great General Grant had slaves right up until after the war...and numerous others did also....

Now, to address this,, some will say the South committed treason from breaking away from the Union... Well, if you will read most of the Original States ,, all considered themselves a seperate country within the United States... that is if you will read the Constitution of the United States..... That is why they broke from the others,, they felt they had every right to do so...

Now, here we are,, 2006,, If any state even thought about saying No, to the Federal Government,,,, what do you think would happen???? Is this a government by the people??? Or a people by the Government !!!! We are slowly giving away our civil rights on a daily basis,,,,,

I do! I used to have a rebel flag bumper sticker on the back of my truck, but it got to where it wouldn't stick any more. It's good to see that there's some people who still like it, though. I've seen a lot of people in this category saying it's racist or that it stands for slavery, but for me it symbolizes rebellion and Southern heritage; at least that's what I like about it. I love Southern literature and I love the rebel flag. :)

If you support a lost struggle based on secession from a Union for the preservation of an oppressive socioeconomic system, go ahead and love it.

If you have any respect for human dignity, well, that's another thing entirely.

Edit:

The reasons for secession were clearly linked to the Southerner's wish to preserve slavery. All constitutional qualms and disagreements stemmed from this issue.

As for the proclamation, well, Abe certainly didn't want to alienate the border states.

Edit 2:

And the politics were based on the question of the South's need to maintain its slave-based economy.

Also, no political leader would want to promote the fragmentation of his territory.

You say the Civil War was started over politics? I think the Confederacy's founders would disagree with you:

" Our new government is founded on the great truth that the ***** is not equal to the white man."

- Alexander Stevens (Vice President of the Confederate States of America), 1861.

I love my relatives that lived and died during that time, for the same reasons, but sorry, I don't love the flag. I lived in the south, 2 different states, and the ones that flew that flag were not really the types of people I respect, sorry. Often, they are racist, not patriotic in my opinion. You can be proud though, that they fought for what they thought was right, and not necessarily agree with them.

Who "likes" it? You mean do I "like" it more than just friends?

I don't think that the rebel flag is really something which the U.S. government has any interest in protecting. After all it is the flag of an enemy force which occupied our territory. Unless you are serious about trying to secede again I would suggest that you find something a bit more current to identify with.
