well, the "whole Jesus thing" had nothing to do with the life of a female slave in Roman time. anyhow, it all depended upon how the slave owner treated you. they did not have any rights, but they could earn their freedom and actually make a significant life for themselves.

the Roman Empire really made so many significant advances. they took what they learned from groups of people all over the world- including the Greeks & Etruscans. they then molded it into something. they really advanced what they absorbed from other peoples. they were great in that aspect & with all their innovations. they weren't perfect, obviously, or they would never have fallen!

you really do need to read your text book if this is a homework question because there are many specific answers and some vary depending upon the source, especially to the second question.

I recently did an exam on Rome which involved a few questions on slaves

The life of a Roman Slave was an awful one, the most common route into slavery was 'Captured by war' (this is where a city state would defeat another state, and therefore would have control over the majority of citizens), you could also be born or sold into slavery.

When you arrived to the state, you were sold at auction, this is where the slave would've been completely stripped (new arrivals were marked with chalked feet) and they had a placard hanged round their neck which contained various information such as age, health, various traits, and likeliness of running away.

In Roman law, slaves were considered to be the property of their owner, they had no legal rights, and their families were of no significance. A brand new slave would be stripped of his/hers identity, probably given a new name, and if they were involved in a court case they would never mention anything like torture as their master would get cross and torture the slave in private. Although household slaves might of lived with a sympathetic master and could of lived in the household alongside the family. Although industrial (people who worked in mines and farms) and public slaves (people who worked on public buildings) were often punished. It was definitely a horrible lifestyle!

Extra: Juvenal speaks of girls/ladies who were forced to sleep with thier master just so they could be persistently punished?!
