I just had mine done today and it was a little uncomfortable, but I wouldn't say that it was painful. It gave me a chance to practice my breathing techniques. :)

I've known three women who've had this done and they all said it hurt a lot.
It's not necessary to have your membranes stripped. If your doctor is suggesting you do it, I would get a second opinion. It's not something that needs to be done. There are less invasive ways of encouraging labor to start.

I had my membranes stripped with my second daughter. truth be told it hurt quite a bit. and to answer to the poster saying that there are better ways to help labour. yes there are other things, but if it comes down to medicated(pitocin )to get things started or to have membranes stripped. Defintely have them strip you!!!! trust me, I had pitocin with both my girls. now that is ouch!

I had mine stripped it does burn in your lower abdomen and is a tad bit more painful than a serious menstrual cramp but it only lasts for about two seconds no big deal

It feels uncomfortable, and a little scratchy. Actually, it hurt a tiny, tiny bit, but nothing compared to labor pain!

It feels a like a bit more invasive vaginal exam, kinda like a pap just a bit longer. No real pain just uncomfortable!

I had it done twice. It's not painful at all, just a little uncomfortable. If you've had a pap smear, it's a lot like that.
