I've used my 4wd off and on for the last two days. This is the first time I've used it since buying it. My Jeep started making a loud whining sound yesterday and today then tonight the speedometer and odometer stopped, followed by a large grinding sound. This has never happened until I used the 4wd. It almost seems as though the Jeep isn't switching into 2wd, that it is driving between 2wd and 4wd.
Lastly, there was a real toxic smell. Didn't smell like burning oil.
Anybody have any idea's?

As it points out in the Jeep manual you need to engage the 4-wheel drive occassionally to lubricate and move the trasfer case. When you don't use it periodically it can dry upo, freeze, etc. Sounds like it has bitten the dust from not being employed for an extended period of time. It also sounds like it is not able to be disengaged from the shifter and that you mighthave to have someone do this manually.

Sounds like the trans or maybe the transfer case - but first get under neath and have a look at all your u-joints. Check fluid on both units and see if anything looks burned.

Well your transfer case has gone to Jeep Heaven. Before replacing it, make sure (or have someone do it for you) that the front differential and front hubs are not at fault. When you replace the transfer case, you don't want it to implode also.

Sounds like you have successfully fried your front differential.
Sometimes when you don't use something for a long while, it doesn't work when you finally do! Don't keep driving. Get it checked out by a reputable repairman.
