Who is better: Satriani, the legendary guitarist who taught Kirk Hammet and Steve Vai? Or is it Vai, his student, whose music is challenging yet unique?

I vote for Vai.

Petrucci is tied with Vai for my favourite guitar player as Dream Theater is my favourite band ("Scenes from a Memory"....no other album can compare)

Ouch tough question dude.
My opinion :
Joe satriani is really a killer guitar player that we do respect so much. His harmony in every albums is really amazing, he mix the music so well, he put the blues, jazz and rock also metal, but if i do hear it closely, what he play seem to be so "read a book", not so free and explosive.
But Steve vai is different, he doing his job so "free", really free and total, so if i listen to his albums, i told my self that what the guitar should be played and sounded. His improvization is really awesome.

So i prefer to choose Vai is better.

Satriani only taught Hammet and Vai how to better express themselves through their playing. Personally, I don't like how any of the three of them play. It is very predictable.

I think John Petrucci from Dream Theater is a lot better than either Satriani or Vai. He has his classical and jazz chops, but also likes to play metal. On the G3 tour, you can really tell when he's playing.

Anyone else with me?

I have to vote Vai! He plays with such a passion and that is something that isn't taught!!
But now don't get me wrong because I am a fan of Satriani also but Steve just really has a sound that moves something in my soul. Seeing him live was one of the most memorable moments of my life! He really is a Guitar God!

Wow, this is a tough one. I have followed both closely for so many years. Satch is so technically amazing and has incorporated different types of music on his albums. Vai is so experimental, for lack of a better word, and just as amazing in his own right. I would give the nod to Satch, not because he taught Vai, but because I just find his music drops my jaw, his rock songs are well structured and his slower songs filled with emotion.
