Saddam had been breaking the peace treaty from the last war all this time. The UN was doing nothing about it. He was not complying with UN mandates, the UN was doing nothing about it.
After 911 we had the a bit of political carte blanke. Bush and his cabinet had a theory that the people of Iraq would be happy to be rid of Saddam, and would embrace democracy. Now was the time.
Saddam was trying to fool everyone that he still had WMD's. We know he had them as recently as when he gassed the Kurds. Bush pushed Saddam on the WMDs and treaty violations and Saddam bluffed. Bush called him on his bluff and we took out the 3rd largest army in the world like we were fighting against children.
But now we see the Iraq people could only be ruled with an iron fist, and we do not have the stomach to do what needs to be done there to keep the peace.

Bush and his administration really did believe Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. They were short-sighted about the reasons why Iraq would be leaving the issue ambiguous. They thought it was a sign that Iraq still had WMDs. Internal documents found in Iraq since the war began indicate that Iraq wanted to leave doubt as to whether they still held WMDs as protection against Iran and Israel.
Reason #1b is that Bush and his administration wanted to send a broader message regarding the war on terror, beyond the war in Afghanistan. He wanted to make an example of Iraq that the United States would not permit countries to harbor WMDs - remember, he believed that we would be uncovering chemical weapons all over the place in there.
I would encourage you to check out this book called Cobra II. It is an amazing book describing the Iraq War from a military/strategic perspective. It is 99.9% unbiased. The authors were given access to internal Iraqi documents that have been seized from Iraqi government offices during the war, and information from interviews of Iraqi government officials captured during the war.

Bush Sr. went to war against Iraq because of that nation's invasion of Kuwait.
Bush Jr. went to war because Iraq refused to comply with UN mandates.
Those are the reasons given by the two Bushes. Whether you believe them or not is up to you, but go back and read the press releases and those are the specific reasons cited at the time.

It is not ancient history you know, we all were here, to be informed by the most sophisticated network of information that ever existed in this planet. The United Nation Resolutions where violated and ignored by Saddam Husein. United States did not go to war alone, and Bush could not send British, Japanese, Australian and other fore gin troops to Iraq. Make your own conclusions. All that harping about WMD, and intelligence reports is just
a lot of political garbage.

As I recall, Saddam did not comply with inspections and ulitmatums by President Bush that seemed strong and valid.
However, I don't agree with the PC way it's been going on and air power should have concluded this thing a long time ago.
To those who are still on the WMD kick, remember that everyone believed Saddam had them, including John Kerry and other Democrats, but they changed their tune when they saw it was to their advantage to do so.

1. Saddam Hussien tried to assassinate GWB senior and,
2. Saddam had likeness of both Bushes on the entrance floor to his main government building where they were walking over hundreds of times a day, a major league insult in Iraqi society.
GWB being an ignorant fool with no understanding of the disaster that was Vietnam blundered into his own.

Bush gave three answers and rotated them in his rhetoric based on the events and public opinion of the week. They were: WMD, democracy, and Al Queda.

We went to war- because Bush wanted war. He wanted conflict so he could show the world he was under control and could help the USA- but instead has showed us greed is worse then peace.
