I thought they quit doing that a few years ago. Maybe some places they still do it. It would be a good thing if they did, but some cars would be really tricky to get unlocked, so they might pass on it.

Thanks Patti, I really didn't think it was a reasonable solution to call the police on a locked vehicle.

Generally they won't unlock your car unless there is a danger, such as a child locked in the car or maybe a dog on a hot day. Most cars now are electric locks and slim jims that police use damage the wiring, so its a liability issue. It's also a time problem. Police are often too busy. So, unless the baby or the dog are trapped in there you will probably have to call a locksmith.

Call a car dealer with your key code or VIN # they can make you a key but you will need proof of ownership. If you bought the car from that dealer it should be easy enough, then you will have a spare for the next time you lock yourself out, sounds like it is a habit anyways. If your car has a trunk release inside the car and you didn't lock all the doors just use the inside release. If you don't have a manual or power release you can try to fold down the rear seat if equipped that way or just remove the back of the rear seat. Don't put both sets of keys in the same place in the future. and find yourself a warm and safe place to sleep.

The police will only unlock your car for you if your child or pet is locked inside

There are still police departments that will open a door for you even if you don't have a kid/pet inside. For those departments, you need to sign a waiver that releases them from any liability if they damage your vehicle while breaking in.

No we do not unlock your vehicle for you if you lock the keys inside, that is why you need to buy a AAA (or similar) membership.
